João González se convirtió el año pasado en el primer animador portugués premiado en el Festival de Cannes con Ice Merchants, que recibió el Premio del Jurado al Mejor Cortometraje en la Semana de la Crítica. La película estuvo también nominada a los premios de la Academia de Hollywood, los Oscars, siendo el primer film portugués en tener este reconocimiento. El reciente largometraje Nayola (2022), de José Miguel Ribeiro, figura clave en la animación en Portugal, ha recibido asimismo reconocimiento internacional. Estos films son solo la punta del iceberg de una cinematografía animada reciente de gran personalidad, la cual, a pesar de su cercanía geográfica, apenas se conoce en nuestro país. Portugal está experimentando en este ámbito el mejor momento de su historia, con una producción de un marcado carácter autoral, y que no ha dejado de crecer en estos últimos 30 años.

Con la participación de la Embajada de Portugal en Madrid y el Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual de Portugal, Madrid acoge un foco especial de la animación portuguesa con autores y autoras contemporáneos como Regina Pessoa, Abi Feijóo, Laura Gonçalves, Jose Miguel Ribeiro, Joanna Toste, David Doutel y Vasco Sa y algunos cortometrajes históricos, coincidiendo con la celebración del centenario de su cinematografía animada.

Last year, João González became the first Portuguese animator to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival. His film Ice Merchants won the Jury Prize for Best Short Film during Critics’ Week and was also nominated for the Hollywood Academy Awards, i.e., the Oscars, making it the first Portuguese film to receive this accolade. The recently released feature film Nayola (2022), by José Miguel Ribeiro, a key figure in Portuguese animation, has also received international acclaim, but these films are really just the tip of the iceberg of a vibrant and highly distinctive animated film industry, which, despite its geographical proximity, is virtually unknown in our country. Portugal is currently enjoying its finest hour in this field, with outstanding auteur producers who have been steadily on the rise for the last 30 years.

Coinciding with the celebration of the centenary of Portuguese animation and with the participation of the Portuguese Embassy in Madrid and the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual de Portugal, Madrid is putting the spotlight on Portuguese animation by presenting contemporary authors such as Regina Pessoa, Abi Feijóo, Laura Gonçalves, Jose Miguel Ribeiro, Joanna Toste, David Doutel and Vasco Sa, as well as a selection of historical short films.
