Irene de Andrés
I take images from different areas such as advertising or security and then frame and fragment them and use recordings of recordings to turn them into something else. By showing them in a different form, I activate certain objects and images to give them the power to make people think or suggest another reality.
My process mixes images I’ve rescued from everyday contexts, images that call to me from art history and images that recall texts and texts that recall images. What thrills me most about doing art is that it gives you the chance to show these references and thus reveal things otherwise invisible to us.

Questions
1. What made you choose art as a profession?
More than a decision as such, it’s a consequence of my desire to find the best possible way of expressing my interests and concerns
2. How would you define your work?
Very varied, amongst other reasons because I usually work with very different media, although there’s always a common thread in terms of the subjects that arise through our processes.
3. What subjects are you interested in?
I’m currently working on how to open windows in our way of perceiving images so we can take a step back to think in the face of the relentless media bombardment. I like to play with the absurdity of our society, such as the incessant production of images and the filters through which our reality is seen.
4. What resources – formal or otherwise – do you use in your work?
I usually work with objects, recordings or images I find with a series of features, or I touch upon certain aspects I think about and then I create the means to read them as I see fit. I don’t use any one specific technique; it depends on what I’m working on.
5. What relationship does your work have with reality? What are your raw materials?
I’d say my work comes from my environment rather than reality, from certain phenomena that grab my attention in the context I live in. This constitutes the raw material for my work and varies according to the project in question and ranges from travel magazines to webcams.
6. What, according to you, is the point of art?
If it actually has any point, the most important thing for me, what I feel most, would be to reveal things that would otherwise remain invisible, its ability to look afresh at things we take for granted.
7. How do you hope the public will receive your work? What audience are you aiming at?
I’m not aiming at any audience in particular, although I guess people who are interested in the content of my work will enjoy it more. I simply believe that, like many other people’s, my work has different levels on which it can be read and I hope it suggests something to my public, makes them feel something – that they take something away with them.
8. What qualifications have you got? What do you value most from your time in education?
I graduated in fine art from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. The best thing from this time was meeting people who are now friends and colleagues, people I never cease learning from and who I share my interests with. I also value a series of teachers who made me aware of the need to explore what is now the material for my work
.
9. How would you define your current professional situation? And in the future?
As a young artist, my current situation is sometimes tricky, but projects keep coming up, which is important. I hope to carry on doing my projects and having the chance to show them.
10. Many artists say it’s difficult to make a living from their work; how do economic considerations affect you when it comes to work? Do you think this has a bearing on your work?
I think it certainly has a bearing, above all in terms of having a space to work. One major problem is that many art contests don’t make any provision for covering artists’ expenses or the use of a space to create the projects, which is basic to any work.
11. What do you look for or expect from your relationship with promoters and curators? What advantages and difficulties have you found with these relationships?
I look for a mutually enriching relationship. So far they’ve brought more advantages than disadvantages. Sometimes the problem lies in making yourself known.
12. What do you think sets the arts scene in Madrid apart from elsewhere? What would you say are its pluses and minuses?
I think Madrid has lots of galleries and art centres showing a fairly wide range of different things, from established artists to up-and-coming ones. The most positive thing is that there are budding artists doing things that make it worthwhile getting to know the Madrid arts scene. However, there’s a need for more spaces for creating art and more adventurous possibilities for exhibition.
